The Hennepin County medical examiner determined that cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, was the primary cause of the death of former Gophers linebacker Gary Tinsley.

The report released Wednesday also stated that the death resulted from natural causes. Cardiomegaly is not a disease itself but rather a symptom of problems like stress or a heart condition.

Tinsley, 22, was found unresponsive in his on-campus apartment on April 6. The university will award him an honorary degree in May.

Tinsley was a senior during the Gophers’ 2011 season and was second on the Minnesota defense with 87 total tackles in 12 games. He also had a team-high four sacks and nine tackles for loss.
